We asked our Compliance Administrator, Georgia, to give us (and you) an insight into her day and the role of a compliance administrator in recruitment.
---
My role as a Compliance Administrator at Smile Education is to clear candidates through our safeguarding process which adheres to the APSCo Compliance+ and Keeping Children Safe in Education guidelines. This ensures that the candidates who work with us are of the highest quality and are safe to work with children and vulnerable adults.
Morning
My day starts at 8:30AM where I spend an hour responding to emails and transferring documents to candidate files. I then catch up with my consultants and update them on the progress of their candidates. I currently work with consultants who cover primary and secondary schools across Sandwell, Worcestershire, Solihull, North and South Birmingham, and the Black Country.
From 9:30AM to 11:00AM, I then chase references from a wide range of people including teachers, police officers and business owners. This involves phone calls and emails and requires strong negotiation and communication skills.
For the rest of the morning, I work proactively on files and carefully analyse evidence from each candidate. This includes gathering documents, correcting dates, and applying for DBS applications.
Lunchtime
At 1:00PM I take my generous 1-hour lunch break which gives me time to recharge and step away from my desk for a while. I usually spend this time eating and watching the news to catch up on what’s happening in the world.
Afternoon
The past 12 months have been tough on everybody and working from home can get lonely at times. To help combat this, the admin team hold a ‘virtual office’ space on Microsoft Teams which allows us to chat and recreate the busy office environment which we all miss. This also gives us time to ask questions about files and help each other with our work.
Throughout the afternoon I split my time between reacting to emails, requesting documents and references, and answering queries which arise from colleagues and candidates.
As part of our commitment to maintaining high safeguarding standards, every candidate file is double-checked by a second member of the admin team to ensure nothing is overlooked. I spend one hour every afternoon checking files for other members of our team which increases our candidate pool and allows more teaching staff to be placed in schools through us.
My day ends at 5:00PM and I always make sure I have left myself a to-do list for the next day so I can start each morning organised and motivated to produce high quality work.
