September Survival Guide: Top Tips for Teachers and School Support Staff

The summer holidays are drawing to a close once again. With the new school year looming on the horizon, we know that anticipating the start of September can be a time of worry as well as excitement.

Whether you’re just about to start your first school role or are a seasoned teacher that’s seen it all before, you don’t have to do it alone. So, to ensure you’re prepared for the term ahead, we’ve come up with a quick survival guide packed with tips and tricks that will help you hit the ground running.

Get Organised

You know the saying – “tidy room, tidy mind”. Organising your environment will help to set the tone for your first few weeks back. That means tidying your classroom, clearing your desk and making sure you’ve got everything you need ready to go for the Autumn Term.

If you’re working in a support role or as a supply teacher, this could mean getting your resources in order, sorting out any paperwork you need and ensuring you’ve got the right stationery to hand. You can never have too many pens – and trust us, you’ll probably need to replace them pretty soon anyway.

Get Planning

Preparation is key to making your transition into the school year a smooth one. Make sure to take some time before the start of the year to prepare things like classroom displays, seating plans, and any activities you’d like to get a head start on.

By planning as far in advance as possible, you can reduce stress when faced with unexpected challenges.

Get Connected

Now’s a great time to reconnect with your colleagues. If you’re returning to a regular role, why not meet up with someone you get along with from school? This can be especially useful if you’re worried or want help with getting back into the swing of things.

If this is your first role, it could be useful connecting with someone at your new job, or simply a friend who understands your role. You can get some handy tips and tricks from them, as well as gain more confidence going into your first day.

Get Relaxed

All this talk about planning, connecting and organising might sound stressful, but you don’t need to move mountains. It’s really important to look after number one during the remainder of the school holidays.

Whether that’s taking some high-quality time to yourself each day for a hobby, treating yourself to some self-care activities or having a laugh with friends, staying calm and positive will help guide you through the start of term.
