Questions tutors should ask parents

It’s important that before you begin working with any parent and student that you have an in-depth conversation about the parents expectations and the child’s needs. Doing so will help to ensure that you and the parent/guardian are all on the same page in regards to what can be achieved from the sessions. It’s also an opportunity for all parties to ask questions and ensure that the fit is right.

As a tutor there are some key questions you should be asking both parents and students to establish what they are looking for from a tutor and how you can help. We’ve provided some examples of key questions for both below.

Questions to ask parents

Communication with parents happens in platform using our messenger. However, if you’d prefer to chat ‘in person’, we recommend offering one of your two free trials (you get two per student) to enable you to chat with the parent/guardian by video using our Tutor Room.

  • Why do you want your child to work with a tutor?
  • What do you want the student to achieve in the tutoring sessions?
  • How often would you want them to occur?
  • Would you like to be present during the session?
  • What subjects or topics within the subject are they struggling with?
  • Are they prepping for any exams, if so what are they?
  • Have you worked with a tutor before?

Providing this initial conversation goes well and both you and the parent/guardian are happy, then you may begin to arrange lessons and putting our state-of-the-art Tutor Room to good use!

Before diving straight into teaching, we advise all of our Smile Tutors to make use of their remaining free trial to get to know the student a little better and discover the student’s learning style so that sessions can be tailored appropriately.
