As Christmas is around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you can bring the festive spirit into your classroom. The good news is that there are endless ways in which you can add Christmas magic to your lesson; whatever that lesson might be. 

To help make lesson planning a little easier we’ve compiled together a number of fun, festive lesson ideas that you might not have previously thought about.

Art 

There are tonnes of art and craft activities that your students can do at Christmas time. From card making to bauble creating. Of course, as always the messier the better! For more inspiration take a look here where you can find activities to suit every skill level. 

To go the extra mile and add another layer to the task,  you could then have your students send the cards to a local care home or sell them and donate the proceeds to a chosen charity - we recommend Help Harry Help Others.

Geography

While Christmas is a very big part of our culture in the UK, the same can’t be said for other parts of the world. The festive season provides a great time to teach your students about different cultures and how they celebrate (or don’t celebrate). 

For example, some Eastern European countries actually celebrate on the 24th December rather than the 25th, while the Swedes enjoy a Christmas buffet rather than a turkey dinner. RE

Similarly, religious education offers a great chance to teach your students about the story behind Christmas and it’s meaning. But it also allows for the chance to look at how other religions and what they may celebrate instead of.

This is particularly great in more ethnically diverse classrooms as it can provide students with the opportunity for students to teach their classmates about their religion. 

Food technology

You can never have enough treats for Christmas! From stained glass cookies to marzipan-covered dates, mince pies to gingerbread, there are lots of simple and fun recipes you can choose from. Not only are your students having fun baking and cooking with their friends but they're also learning while doing so. 

You could even bring some culture into this and have your pupils bake or cook different foods from Christmases around the world. For recipes head to BBC Good Food.
