Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a support worker is like? Have you wondered how rewarding it can be? For many people being a support worker is satisfying, fulfilling and inspiring. Every day is different, one day you can be having a tour of Birmingham City Football ground and the next you can be ghost hunting around Cannock Chase.

A typical day would be arriving at the home for 7:15 am to do a complete hand over with the night staff. During the handover, you will be informed of who you will be supporting during the day. You’ll then be able to divide your attention to ensure all service users get the best out of the day ahead.

You will start your day with waking the service users ensuring the have had a healthy breakfast and start the day in the correct way. After all, it’s important for all of us that we wake up on the right side of the bed! 

The majority of the day is led by the service users, you may be asked to take them into the local town, for a walk around the park or to bake cakes. You may also be tasked with organising games nights, bake-offs or even trips to Alton Towers. It’s all about supporting them and helping them to lead as normal a life as possible. Remember these are children and they like to have fun. 

You’ll then cook dinner with the service users (depending on their age) and get them ready for the next day. Each stage of the day is crucial Ultimately, the job of a support worker is to support, enable and teach service users valuable life skills that they can use in and out of the home. 

As a support worker, you can see real changes in service users’ lives from the support you give, you are not only going to be their support workers, but you turn into their friends and family. The confidence you give them allows them to grow and reach their full potential.
