Smile Education are currently recruiting on behalf of a welcoming and supportive SEN primary school in the Tamworth area for an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team as soon as possible.

This is a full-time, long-term opportunity supporting primary-aged pupils with a range of additional needs, with a particular focus on Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH).

The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge, understanding and proven experience of supporting primary-aged children with SEMH needs. You will need to be confident in managing challenging behaviour, supporting emotional regulation and building positive, trusting relationships with pupils.

The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to provide consistent, nurturing and structured support to pupils both within the classroom and across the wider school environment.

The role will involve:
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to primary-aged pupils with SEMH needs
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, self-esteem and social development
  • Managing and responding appropriately to challenging behaviour
  • Using positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques
  • Building strong, trusting and positive relationships with pupils
  • Supporting pupils to engage with learning and develop their independence
  • Helping to create a calm, safe and structured learning environment
  • Working closely with teachers and the wider SEN team to provide consistent support
  • Supporting pupils with additional communication, sensory and behavioural needs
  • Working across the school's three sites where required
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of SEMH and the challenges it can present for primary-aged pupils
  • Significant experience supporting children with SEMH, ideally within an SEN, specialist or primary school setting
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm and consistent when faced with challenging behaviour
  • Experience using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies
  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with children
  • A patient, resilient and nurturing approach
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • The ability to follow individual support plans and provide consistent boundaries
  • A genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers to learning
  • The ability to commit to a full-time, long-term position
  • Reliability and consistency – these are essential qualities for this role
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a relevant qualification, such as:
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification
  • CACHE qualification
  • Childcare or Education-related qualification
  • Or an equivalent relevant qualification/experience
